Yaw Aning Boadu, a senior lawyer at the Bar in private practice in Accra has caused his Lawyers, Hales Solicitors led by the learned Kwasi Adu-Mante to issue and file on his behalf, a writ seeking orders of the High directed at the Registrar of Comapnies and the General Legal Council to expunge the registration of Ghana Law Society as a Professional Body and withdraw the accreditation of Ghana Law Society(GLS) by the General Legal Council to licence lawyers and law chambers.

In his writ filed on Friday, the 23rd day of January, 2026, the Plaintiff seeks to perpetually injunct GLS from holding itself as a professional body and any legal recognition of the body undone by the Registrar of Professional Bodies.

75% threshold

The pivot of the case of the Plaintiff per his writ available below is that per sections of the PROFESSIONAL BODIES REGISTRATION ACT, 1973 the Registrar is mandated by law to ensure that upon the registration of a professional body, the said body has membership of atleast 75% of all the professionals which the body belongs.

Per section 7 of the Act available on our library here, the reads as follows:

"7. Registration

(1) The registrar shall, subject to this Act, register a professional body applying for registration if satisfied

(a) regarding the body’s compliance with the requirements of section 5,

(b) that it is a body as is described in subsection (2) of section 5, and

(c) that it is a body which represents not less that seventy-five percent of the persons trained and qualified in the profession in respect of which that body desires to be registered."

Ghana Law Society has less than 1% of all lawyers

Per the writ of Mr. Boadu, his search at the Registry of the Registrar of Companies indicates that the newly formed and accredited body which has a supreme Court suit seeking to dislodge recognition of the Ghana Bar Association as the only body of lawyers by the 1992 constitution has membership of just 1% of lawyers duly trained and called to practice in Ghana.
