On the 2nd day of September, 2026, the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Republic of Ghana, H/L Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie in the company of H/L Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, who is highly tipped to succeed him as CJ, the Director of the Ghana School of Law, Prof. Atuguba and others paid working visits to some State institutions belonging to the executive branch of government.

In a speech at the offices of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is captured to have made some comments deemed as supportive of the present government against its successor. In further commentary, the learned Chief Justice, H/L Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is heard to be calling for support for the President for him to succeed.

Following the comments, the Chief Justice has come under severe criticism. The criticisms center on his impartiality and his independence and the perception of same to fairly administer justice between parties especially where a claim is brought against the current government or the conduct of the President he was captured to be rallying support for.

The recent incident and fire directed at the Chief Justice follows other periods of criticism where he was seen with a delegation of the executive branch of government to give support to the Ghana Blackstars at the 2026 World Cup in the United States of America.

Judicial Service Code of Conduct

The code of conduct for Judges and Magistrates as published by the Judicial Service of Ghana, employer of all Judges and Magistrates in Ghana are "standards for the ethical behaviour of judges. It is not an all-encompassing model of appropriate conduct for judges, but rather a complement to general ethical standards and other rules, statutes and laws governing judges and magistrates’ judicial and personal conduct. The Code is designed to assist judges in practising the highest standards of judicial and personal conduct and to establish a basis for disciplinary agencies to regulate judges’ conduct."

Breaches to the code of conduct comes with punishment. Per page 7 of the code:

"1.This Code shall apply to judges, magistrates and anyone performing judicial functions.

2. A judge who commits a breach of any rule of this Code shall be sanctioned with reference to the gravity of the act or omission constituting the breach."
