The Chief Justice of Ghana, His Lordship Justice Kwasi Anin
Yeboah has indicted that the Legal Profession Bill will make continuing professional legal education a pre-requirement for the renewal of a lawyer’s solicitor’s licence.
His Lordship disclosed this at the enrolment ceremony of 196 lawyers on Friday, 5th May 2023 at the International Conference Centre.
Continuing professional legal education is mandatory by
virtue of rule 84 of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020 L.I. 2423. The rule does not make continuing professional legal education a precondition for the renewal of a solicitor’s licence.
The passage of the intended Legal Profession Bill will therefore add a new layer to the mandatory nature of continuing professional legal education for legal practitioners.
The Chief Justice disclosed this new provision in the
regulatory framework for legal profession practice when he adviced the newly enrolled lawyers to continue learning to improve themselves and their work at the bar.
