A new book seeks to make tort law more accessible to Ghanaian law students through practical explanations and locally relevant judicial decisions.
On 10th October, 2026, Dr. Jennifer Owusu-Akyaw launched Tort Law: A Practical Ghanaian Case Book and Study Guide on Tort at Kwarleyz Residence, Accra. The book helps students understand tort law through Ghanaian case law.
The event was chaired by Lieutenant Colonel Mirabelle Efua Ewuaba Howard, who delivered an address and officially launched the book. Former Deputy Attorney-General & Minister for Justice, Honourable Diana Asonaba Dapaah, attended as special guest and also delivered an address. The launch drew lawyers, members of the academic community and students, and doubled as a networking platform.
Responding to a Need in Legal Education
The idea for the book came to Dr. Owusu-Akyaw while she was a lecturer at King’s College. Her students often asked for Ghanaian cases on tort and how its principles apply in Ghana, because most available textbooks relied on English cases. The requests continued after she moved to the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). “I wrote it for my students,” Dr. Jennifer said, explaining that she had Ghanaian law students generally in mind. She credited God’s grace for seeing the work through.
Reviewing the Book
The book was reviewed by Mr. Emmanuel Bimpeh, a student at GIMPA Law School, who spoke about his search for a resource that would help him understand tort law better. He found that the book did this and also related the law to Ghana through Ghanaian cases. Drawing on his background in marketing, he reflected on how learning from materials that do not reflect one’s own context can be difficult, and said he found the same in the law of tort. He was therefore glad to find a book that simplified the concepts using Ghanaian authorities.
Honourable Dapaah, herself a lecturer, said she had gone through the book and found it valuable to the Ghanaian legal space because it relies mainly on Ghanaian cases to explain the law of tort. She added that she believes contract law and tort law should be taught even at the basic level, because they are areas of law everyone should know something about. She congratulated Dr Jennifer on completing the work while pursuing her PhD.
