The Supreme Court during proceedings on the 2nd day of June, 2026 in the case of THE REPUBLIC VRS THE COURT OF APPEAL, CIVIL DIV., KUMASI EX-PARTE: CALBANK PLC (SUIT NO. J5/54/2026) demonstrated its displeasure with the quality of advocacy and applications before the Court.
The Court landed itself in its expression of displeasure upon the calling of the above case when the learned Serwaa Amihere, a lawyer less than a year at the Bar announced herself as Counsel for the Applicant and further announced herself as appearing with a learned friend who upon interrogation by their Lordships, informed the Court he was also just a year at the Bar.
The Supreme Court Presided by the third senior-most Supreme Court Judge, Amadu Tanko, registered its disapproval of junior lawyers appearing before them without a Senior Lawyer.
The Court which appeared to already know the years of Ms. Amihere at the Bar suggested to Ms. Amihere that owing to her inexperience due to her less than one year time at the Bar, she may not be able to advance strong arguments and demonstrate advocacy skills before the Court.
The Court added that she also may not be able to assist the Court as it's officer and refer them to recent Supreme Court cases to overturn the decision of the Court if proceedings and the business for the day should descend into serious arguments.
The Court latched unto the present events, with a disclaimer issued to Ms. Amihere that their new complaint was not directed at her, to now vent on the waning quality of advocacy and processes before it. After the sermon of the Court, Ms. Amihere prayed for the withdrawal of her certiorari application as she was billed to do for the day.
Directive from CJ on appearance
Legal news reports of complaints by the Supreme Court about Junior Lawyers appearing before the Court without Seniors is not new to The Law Platform. Some four years ago, the current Chief Justice in open Court invited the respected Frank Davies to comment, as a former Bar Executive and a highly respected Senior member of the Bar, on the disturbingly wrong processes filed by young lawyers without guidance or leadership by a senior at the Bar.
Below is an interview by The Law Platform with the inimitable Frank Davies who recommends a directive from the Chief Justice on appearance before the Supreme Court by Junior Lawyers.
