A British lawmaker has intensified her legal battle against Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, by asking the High Court in London to order the company to permanently prevent its chatbot, Grok, from generating non-consensual sexualised images of her.

The lawsuit, filed by Labour Member of Parliament Jess Asato, is emerging as one of the most closely watched AI-related privacy cases in the United Kingdom. It could establish an important legal precedent on whether AI developers can be held directly responsible when their systems produce harmful or abusive content.

Seeking Permanent Technical Safeguards

According to court filings, Asato is requesting an injunction requiring xAI to implement "effective and permanent technical measures" that would ensure Grok cannot create manipulated sexualised images of her in the future.

The case stems from allegations that Grok generated fake sexualised images of the MP without her consent. Her legal team argues that simply removing the images after they are created is insufficient because the harm occurs the moment such content is generated.

Instead, the lawsuit seeks to compel xAI to redesign its safety systems so the chatbot is technically incapable of producing such material involving Asato.

Questions Over Grok's Safety Design

The claim also scrutinises Grok's underlying design and safety instructions.

According to Asato's lawyers, internal guidance provided to the chatbot contains conflicting instructions. While Grok is directed not to facilitate criminal activity, it is also permitted to generate fictional adult and violent content under certain circumstances.

Her legal team contends that these conflicting safeguards contributed to the chatbot's ability to generate abusive images and that xAI should bear legal responsibility for those design choices.

The lawsuit argues that AI companies should not escape liability where foreseeable risks arise from the way their systems are built and deployed.

Previous Safeguards Under Scrutiny

The legal challenge comes despite xAI announcing earlier in 2026 that it had introduced restrictions preventing Grok from generating explicit images of real people without their consent.

However, investigations cited in the lawsuit allegedly found that the chatbot continued to produce prohibited content even after those safeguards were introduced.

Asato's lawyers argue that this demonstrates that existing protections remain inadequate and reinforces the need for a court-ordered technical solution rather than voluntary policy changes.

A Major Global Legal Concern

The British case is part of wider international scrutiny facing xAI over Grok's image-generation capabilities.

The company is already confronting similar lawsuits in the United States and the Netherlands concerning allegations that the chatbot has produced harmful or sexually explicit images of individuals without their permission.

The growing number of legal actions reflects increasing concern among lawmakers and regulators over generative AI systems that can create realistic deepfakes, particularly those involving women and public figures.
