The African Bar Association has conferred its Medal of Merit upon Justice Nene Abayaateye Ofoe Amegatcher Retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, for his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to the legal profession and good governance in Africa.
The Regional Bar Association conferred the award at the popening ceremony of the African Bar Association Conference held in Accra from the 19th day of October - the 23rd day of October, 2025. The award citation which was received for on his behalf by his daughter reads as follows:
The African Bar Association confers its Medal of Merit upon Justice Nene Abayaateye Ofoe Amegatcher Retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, for his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to the legal profession and good governance in Africa.
Over four decades, Justice Amegatcher has championed justice through adjudication, arbitration, litigation, and mediation. As Supreme Court Justice (2018-2023), he resolved critical commercial and labor disputes, reinforcing Ghana's rule of law. His expertise, bolstered by an LLM in Advanced Litigation and Dispute Resolution from Nottingham Trent University (2006-2007), certificates in Commercial Dispute Resolution from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (2005) and U.S. Department of Commerce (2001), and Alternative Dispute Resolution from California State University (1996), enabled him to serve as arbitrator and lead counsel in local and international proceedings. A dedicated educator, he lectured on Advocacy, Legal Ethics, and ADR at Ghana School of Law (1994-2018) and tutored Commercial Law at Accra Polytechnic (1980- 1990), mentoring future leaders.
His pan-African leadership has been transformative. He chaired the African Regional Forum of the International Bar Association
(2017-2018) and African Regional Hub of the Commonwealth Association of Lawyers (2017-2018), fostering continental legal collaboration. As Ghana's ICC International Court of Arbitration Representative (2015-2018) and West Africa Regional Representative on the Commonwealth Lawyers Association Council (2011-2018), he advanced fair arbitration and cross-border justice. In Ghana, he led as President of the Ghana Bar Association (2012-2015), Member of the General Council of the Bar and Judicial Council (2012-2015), and Chair of the Legal Aid Board (2020-2023). Additional roles include Chair of the University of Ghana's College of Humanities Advisory Council (2015-2018), World Vision Ghana Advisory Board (2009-2012), National ADR Task Force (2002-2009), and Judicial Training Institute Board (2002-2006), plus ongoing service as Arbitrator at the Ghana Arbitration Centre (2005-present).
Justice Amegatcher's principled adjudication, regional advocacy, and entorship have elevated African jurisprudence and governance. This Medal of Merit honors his legacy as a beacon of excellence.
