The Justice Pwamang Committee of Inquiry under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana has ended the taking of evidence relative to the petition of Mr. Daniel Ofori for the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Esaaba Araba Sackey Torkornoo.
The Committee has ordered for written addresses and is yet to receive same on the allegations of Daniel Ofori and the evidence led in support and against the said allegations.
GBA, Former CJs, SKB Asante and others for Torkornoo
According to sources of The Law Platform at the hearings of the Justice Pwamang Committee, respected former Chief Justices, Anin Yeboah, who travelled all the way from Kumasi just to testify and the no-nonsense Sophia Akuffo all testified in support of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, seeking to shred the allegations of Mr. Ofori.
The globally respected icon in law and revered in all strata of law practice in Ghana, Professor Nana S.K.B. Asante took his turn at the Committee to offer testimony buttressing the case of the Chief Justice of doing no wrong as per the allegations contained in the petititon of Mr. Daniel Ofori.
The Ghana Bar Association, in the voice of its Secretary attended upon the Committee as a witness of the Chief Justice. The Bar Association testified to constituencies who usually offer recommendation for the nomination of persons to the Supreme Court Bench. They thus demonstrated to the committee, per sources of The Law Platform, the incompetence of the ground for the removal of the Chief Justice on allegations of recommending some Justices for the Supreme Court Bench. The Secretary of the Bar Association had the company of the President and the Vice at the Committee.
The long serving member of the General Legal Council, the respected Justin Amenuvor also testified in support of Justice Torkornoo. His testimony was on proceedings at the General Legal Council as the Chief Justice, per our sources, has supplied through Mr. Amenuvor, minutes of meetings of the Council. Per our sources, Mr. Amenuvor's testimony comes to fully rubbish the allegation of Mr. Ofori on the appointment of Circuit Court Judges as Registrars of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
The Learned former Bar President and lawyer with over 50 years of practice, the respected Samuel Okudzeto also took his turn at the Committee. To the decision of no cross-examination by the learned Tsatsu Tsikata, Mr. Okudzeto's testimony suggested to the Justice Pwamang Committee that transfer of Judges as routinely done throughout his time at the Bar and practice cannot be grounds for infractions of a Chief Justice and certainly cannot be the reason for the removal of Justice Torkornoo.
Barker-Vormawor sick
The Committee shall resume hearings on the 15th day of September, 2025 where they shall now focus their attention on the petition of Shining Stars whose lawyer, Mr. Oliver Barker-Vormawor on the last adjourned date sought leave of absence owing to illness.
The committee thus adjourned proceedings for four weeks to allow Mr. Barker-Vormawor recover and wage the case of Shining Stars whose existence as a legal entity and incapacity to bring their petition is before the High Court, General Juridiction division as Presided by the learned John Eugene Nyante Nyadu J.
