Justice Mariama Owusu bows out today

The learned Justice of the Apex Court, Her Ladyship Mariama Owusu J.S.C., known for her calm, collected and measured character in speech and temperance retires from the Bench today, 13th of November, 2024.

Justice Mariama brings to a successful end today her 34 years Judicial career. Justice Owusu began her journey on the Bench in 1990 and was appointed to the Supreme Court Bench after her successful vetting in the year 2019 together with her sisters, Lovelace-Johnson J.S.C and Torkornoo J.S.C, now Chief Justice of the Republic.

Justice Mariama Owusu comes from Beposo in the Ashanti Region and had her secondary education at T.I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School, Kumasi (T.I. Amass). She was called to the Bar in 1981. Justice Owusu cut her teeth in the practice of the Law as a private practitioner with Totoe Legal Services, a firm which in recent times was managed by Justice Mariam Gyasi Jawhary who this year was appointed to the Court of Appeal Bench. In 1990, Justice Owusu joined the bench as a district magistrate, and was later appointed a circuit court judge in 1992. She was elevated as a justice of the High Court in 2000.

In 2003, she was appointed as the supervising High Court judge for Sunyani until 2005. A year after, in 2006, she was appointed a Justice of the Court of Appeal, and in 2019, she was appointed to the Supreme Court. She has been an active member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), serving as President of the Ghana chapter from 2014 to 2018. Justice Mariama Owusu also served as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Judicial Service, and as a member of the Performing Assets Committee, Judicial Service, from 2010 to 2014.
