The Ghana Bar Association has disclosed the failure of the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice (A-G) to include its nominees onto the Board of the Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET).

The President of the Association of Lawyers, Mrs. Afua Ghartey, on the 16th day of September, 2026 during the 3rd day of the 2026 Ghana Bar Association Conference, at the session of the conference where lawyers raise matters affecting the Bar, informed lawyers and conference attendees that the Ghana Bar Association through its long serving Secretary, the learned Baffour Gyau submitted three names for appointment unto the Board of CLET pursuant to section 4(d) of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170).

According to the President of the Association, the Ghana Bar Association was the first institution to submit names of nominees for swearing in unto the Board only for the Bar Association to be informed during the speech of the learned Attorney-General at the Bar Conference that the Board has been inaugurated and indeed, gone ahead to hold two meetings without the nominees of the Bar Association.

Per the Bar President, the learned Afua Ghartey, the said meetings of the Board of CLET were conducted without the knowledge and participation of the nominees of the Bar whose membership are mandated under section 4(d) of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170).

We need to revisit Legal Education Act

The disclosures by the President of the Bar on the absence of the Bar on the Board of CLET followed after she disclosed the need for the Ghana Bar Association to have a relook at the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170) owing to issues and consequences flowing from the implementation of the new model of legal education and training for the practice of the Law and Bar.
