The learned Attorney General and Minister of Justice (A.G), Hon. Godfred Yeboah Dame has advised the Ghana Police Service in a letter dated the 9th of February, 2024 to desist from impounding vehicles for minor road offences such as crossing a red light or driving a vehicle without an insurance certificate.
The A.G in the said letter advised that minor offences are misdemeanours per the Criminal and Offences Act and its accompanying Procedure Act and thus, impounding a vehicle for purposes of evidence of crime is unreasonable and unfair.
The A.G again offered this advice on the basis of eliminating the risk to the State of protecting a vehicle upon seizure and also avoiding the increasing claims and judgement debts against the state for vehicle seizures.
