Heaven Helps Those Who Help Themselves, and so Does Justice, But Who Helps The Helpless? – Evaluating the Accessibility of Legal Aid in Ghana

Another reason legal aid is largely inaccessible is infrastructural and human resource deficits. A Policy Brief by the Legal Resources Centre reveals that the Legal Aid Commission faces challenges relating to inadequate human resource and infrastructure, and logistical constraints. It was also reported by Graphic Online in 2019 that the legal aid system of Ghana had 21 lawyers working under the scheme across the country coupled with lack of equipment and infrastructure . Additionally, His Lordship Justice Yonny Kulendi, Justice of the Supreme Court, speaking at the unveiling of Case Tracking System Ambassadors in October 2021, noted that, “Only 3,213 lawyers are practicing in a population of over 30 million and one of the key justice delivery institutions that caters for the vulnerable like the legal aid commission, as at June of this year, had only 35 lawyers.”
