The Secretary to the President of the Republic, Nana Asante Bediatuo in a letter dated 18th March, 2024 has requested the clerk of Parliament to desist from transmitting the passed Anti-LGBTQ bill to the office of the President for his assent as constitutionally demanded.
Per the letter, which comes on the back of the President's decision to stay his hands owing to suits at the Supreme Court contesting the validity of the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ law, the Secretary to the President, a renowned lawyer himself cites a letter from the Office of the Attorney General dated 18th March, 2024 advising the President not to overreach the court as the court is faced with suits seeking an injunction from it directed at Parliament from transmitting the bill to the President for his assent.
The said suits per the letter from the Secretary to the President are Dr. Amanda Odoi v The Speaker of Parliament & the Attorney General and Richard Sky v The Parliament of Ghana and the Attorney General.
This letter from the Presidency under the hand of the Secretary to the President follows an attempt by the House to submit the bill from Parliament to the Presidency on Thursday, 14th of March, 2024 without success.
