The General Legal Council (GLC), the regulator of the legal Profession in Ghana has announced to the leadership of the bar a 300% increment in licence renewal fees and some substantial increment in chamber registration and renewal for the next legal year.
The Law Platform can confirm as the rumor mill may suggest that the announcement of upward adjustment of licence and chamber fees by the GLC to leadership of the bar was made at a Bar Council meeting on the 14th Day of March, 2024. The fee of GHc250 cedis paid by every lawyer for licence renewal was pegged at the said amount about a decade ago. Per our sources at the GLC and the leadership of the Bar, intervening events since 2014 when the amount was pegged at GHc250 necessitates the increment.
The GLC is yet to formally issue a notice on the expected increment. Per our monitoring of reactions of some lawyers especially junior lawyers to news of the upward adjustment, the increment for many appears to be higher than reasonably expected. Our sources at the Ghana Bar Association indicate that some members of the Bar Council welcome the move by the regulator.
