Mad. Faustina Djagbele Abbey, a known onion seller near Makola Market in the heart of the busy business district of Accra has sued Telecel which is operated by Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited for 2 million cedis as compensation for breaches to her "privacy" and "personal liberties".
In her writ issued and filed on her behalf by the learned Bernard Owiredu Donkor of Thompson Law Consult, she contends that the failure of telecel to seek her consent and use her image without her knowledge to project, market and advertise the 'Telecel Red Save' Product on numerous platforms including social media amounts to an abuse of her image rights.
She therefore seeks from the High Court declarative reliefs to that effect and seeks that billboards, social media and traditional media advertisements of the 'telecel red save' be pulled down.
Mental Health, strained relationships
In her statements on the face of her Statement of Claim accompanying her writ as filed on 23rd May, 2025, Mad. Abbey avers that the use of her image by telecel in their product marketing drive was brought to her attention by others including some of her customers.
She says the said advertisement has brought to her some publicity with family members deeming her to be of financial means. This she says has strained relationships with others and impacted on her mental health. The writ of Mad. Abbey can be read below:
