The General Jurisdiction 9 Court of the Accra High Court presided by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay has delivered Judgment in favour of the famous movie star, Yvonne Nelson in the defamation case filed by her against Mona Gucci, a TV show host for statements uttered by her on NeatFM that Yvonne Nelson is 'slay queen' among others.
According to the Judgment of Justice Kocuvie-Tay delivered on Wednesday, the 30th day of July, 2025 copies of which shall be available for parties on the 8th day of August, 2025, Mona Gucci, the Defendant in the matter defamed Yvonne Nelson by calling her a 'slay queen' and that she receives funding for her lifestyle by persons behind the scenes.
The Court found that Defendant's utterances made on Neat FM on the 26th day of May 2020 amounted to defamation and could not be defended on the grounds of justification and fair comment as suggested to the Court and argued by her lawyer, the learned Samuel Osei Sarpong.
Order for retraction
The expression of Yvonne Nelson as a slay queen and the followings words used by Mona Gucci in description of Yvonne Nelson are to be retracted and apologized for on the same platform where her defamatory statements were uttered which statements included: “Yvonne doesn’t show off, but she is a slay, because you know the slay queen: it entails a lot. We have both showing off and some contacts and people, who we know that, the things that you do and the lifestyle you exhibit, someone is paying for you behind the scenes,”
The lively Judge, Kocuvie-Tay J. whose Courtroom is known for timely sittings ordered Mona Gucci to pay by way of damages for the harm to the reputation of Mad. Nelson and costs of litigation as follows: General damages of GHC250,000.00, Exemplary damages GHC50,000.00, Costs of GHC 40,000.00.
The Judgment of the High Court brings an end to the defamation battle between the parties commencing from 2021. The learned Mrs. Victoria Barth represented the Plaintiff-movie star.
